How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring in 2026? A Practical Budget Guide

How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring in 2026? A Practical Budget Guide

What Do US Couples Actually Spend on an Engagement Ring?

The most recent figures come from The Knot's Real Weddings Study, a survey of nearly 10,500 couples who married in 2025, as reported by IDEX Online.

$4,600

Average spend across lab-grown and natural center stones, with an average stone size of 1.9 carats.

$4,300

Average spend on rings with a lab-grown center stone, which averaged 2.0 carats.

$7,000

Average spend on rings with a natural center stone, which averaged 1.6 carats.

61%

Share of couples who chose a lab-grown diamond, up from 52% the year before.

Keep two cautions in mind. These are self-reported averages from couples who chose to answer a survey, and averages are pulled up by large purchases. They describe what people did, not what is wise for your situation. The median shopper may spend less, and many people spend far less.

Is the Three-Months'-Salary Rule Real?

No. It is a marketing idea, not a financial standard. Accounts of its history trace it to diamond-industry advertising that began in the 1930s with a suggestion of one month's salary, which grew to two months in the 1980s and later to three (see Brilliant Earth's overview and this NBC New York report).

The rule also ignores what actually matters for affordability: your savings, debt, rent or mortgage, and the other big costs coming up. Two people with the same salary can have very different room in their budget.

How to Set Your Own Engagement Ring Budget

  1. Look at cash flow first. List housing, bills, food, debt payments and savings contributions.
  2. Protect your emergency fund. A ring should not be paid for with money you may need for an unexpected expense.
  3. Count what's coming. Wedding costs, a move, travel or a shared home may compete for the same money.
  4. Set a ceiling and a target. Decide the most you will spend, then aim a little below it to leave room for sizing, insurance and incidentals.
  5. Ask about priorities if you can. Stone shape, metal color and style often matter more to the wearer than size alone.
  6. Be careful with financing. Being approved for credit does not mean the purchase is comfortable. Check the total repayment cost, interest and fees before you commit.
Rule of thumb: spend an amount you can pay without taking on stressful debt or giving up important financial goals. This is general information, not financial advice.

Compare details, not just size

A larger carat weight is not automatically a better ring. A well-cut smaller stone can look livelier than a larger stone with weaker cut quality, and a simpler setting can leave more of your budget for the center stone. Compare rings on the same terms: stone origin, carat weight, cut, color, clarity, grading report, metal and setting.

Where to Put Your Budget: Cut, Carat or Setting?

Cut quality

Cut controls how a diamond handles light, and it has a large effect on how bright and lively the stone looks. If you have to choose, cut is usually a better place for extra budget than a small jump in carat weight. The how-to-choose guide walks through the 4Cs in detail.

Carat weight versus face-up size

Carat is a measure of weight, not width. Elongated shapes such as oval, pear and marquise tend to show more surface area than a round stone of the same weight, so they can look larger for the same carat number.

Setting and craftsmanship

A secure setting protects the center stone. Check how the stone is held, whether the band is comfortable for daily wear, and whether the design suits your partner's routine. Halos and side stones add visual presence but can add cost.

Color and clarity

Higher grades usually cost more, but small differences are often hard to see without magnification. Decide which differences you would genuinely notice before paying for a higher grade.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: How the Choice Changes Your Budget

Lab-grown and natural diamonds have the same basic chemistry and hardness, and they differ in origin and in price. The Knot figures above show the gap in practice: about $4,300 average spend for lab-grown rings versus about $7,000 for natural, although the stones in those rings differed in size too.

In 2018 the FTC removed the word "natural" from its definition of a diamond in its Jewelry Guides, while still expecting lab-grown stones to be described with a qualifier such as "laboratory-grown" (National Jeweler summary). So always confirm which kind of stone a listing describes.

Lab-grown

Worth considering if you want to put more of a fixed budget toward carat weight, cut quality or the setting. Review the grading report and exact stone details.

Natural

Worth considering if a mined, natural origin matters to you. The same budget may buy a smaller or differently graded stone than a lab-grown option.

For a fuller comparison, read our lab-grown vs. natural diamond guide, or browse the natural diamond collection and the lab-grown engagement ring collection.

Choosing the Gold: 10K, 14K or 18K

Karat describes how much of the metal is pure gold: 10K is about 41.7%, 14K about 58.3% and 18K 75%. Higher karat means a richer color and usually a higher price, while lower karat gold is typically a little harder-wearing. White, yellow and rose are color choices, not quality grades.

Many STAR JEWELLERY engagement rings list 10K and 14K options, and some list 18K, so check each product page. For a deeper comparison, see the 10K vs. 14K vs. 18K gold guide.

Costs and Policies to Check Beyond the Ring Price

  • Ring size: get it right before ordering. Our at-home sizing guide can help.
  • Shipping and returns: read the shipping policy and return and exchange policy, especially for custom or made-to-order pieces.
  • Taxes and duties: prices are shown in US dollars. Shoppers outside the US should check what taxes or import duties may apply at checkout.
  • Insurance: consider covering the ring once you own it, and budget for the premium.
  • Wedding band: if you plan to buy one too, set a combined budget. You can browse wedding bands separately.

Engagement Ring Budget Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Following a salary formula instead of your own finances.
  2. Treating averages as targets. What others paid says little about what suits you.
  3. Comparing unlike rings. Stone origin, grade, metal and setting all change the price.
  4. Chasing carat weight at the expense of cut quality and a secure setting.
  5. Forgetting extra costs such as sizing, insurance, taxes and shipping.
  6. Stretching under pressure. A meaningful purchase should not create ongoing financial stress.

Engagement Ring Budget FAQs

How much should I spend on an engagement ring in 2026?

Spend what fits your finances and priorities. There is no required amount. For reference, The Knot's latest study found an average of about $4,600 for couples who married in 2025, but an average is not a recommendation.

Is three months' salary the rule for an engagement ring?

No. The idea traces back to diamond-industry advertising and is not a financial standard. Base your budget on savings, expenses, debt and upcoming goals.

Is $1,000 enough for an engagement ring?

It can be, depending on the stone and setting. On October 16, 2026, STAR JEWELLERY listed lab-grown diamond engagement rings with "from" prices a little above $1,000, such as a 1.00 ct IGI certified halo ring from $1,095, plus a moissanite ring from $199.99. Confirm the current price for the metal and size you want.

Is $2,000 a good engagement ring budget?

It can be a workable starting point for comparing lab-grown diamond rings, including larger stones. Compare the exact carat weight, cut, metal and setting rather than assuming every ring at the same price is equivalent.

Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper than natural diamonds?

Generally yes, for stones of similar size and quality. Compare full specifications and grading documentation to make sure you are comparing like with like.

Should I prioritize carat or cut?

Do not choose by carat weight alone. Cut quality strongly affects sparkle, and shape affects how large a stone looks from above.

Should my budget include the wedding band?

That depends on your plans. If you intend to buy both, set a combined budget or decide in advance how much to allocate to each piece.

Should I finance an engagement ring?

Only after reviewing the total repayment cost, interest and fees, and confirming you can pay comfortably. Avoid debt that would strain your finances.
